Go to the Verdant Meadows safehouse and save. If you fail too many times and get frustrated, you can reload.
Approach the landing pad slowly. Hover directly above the pad, and slowly reduce the throttle to descend straight down.

Hold the accelerate button straight. Pull back gently on the analog stick or key when the tail lifts. Immediately retract your landing gear to gain speed and climb through the rings.
The first few lessons establish your mechanical foundation. If you do not learn how to control your speed and altitude here, the later combat and stunt lessons will feel impossible.
