The serial number on IH tractors typically consists of 6-8 digits, depending on the model and production year. The serial number can be found on a metal plate or sticker located on the tractor's engine, transmission, or chassis.
IH serial number tags are made of brass or aluminum. Over seventy years, they can become covered in thick layers of grease, primer, and paint. Use a mild degreaser and a soft brass brush (to avoid scratching the metal) to reveal the numbers.
International Harvester stamped a unique serial number into the engine block itself. While the engine type matched the tractor model, the numbers rarely matched the chassis serial number.
Exact yearly splits require sub-tables. For example, Farmall H serials: 1940 ends ~18213, 1941 ends ~54386, etc. International Harvester Tractor Serial Number Table-
This rule is so fundamental that it has been adopted by nearly all IH enthusiast communities and is considered gospel. For example, if you have a Farmall 806 with serial number 24522, the list above shows the first serial number for 1966 is 24038, and for 1967, it is 34943. Your tractor's number (24522) is higher than the 1966 starting number and lower than the 1967 number, so your tractor is a 1966.
International Harvester (IH) and Farmall tractor production years are identified via serial number plates located on the engine block, transmission, or front bolster. If the plate is missing, casting date codes on major components can be used to determine the year. Detailed, model-specific serial number tables are available from sources such as the Wisconsin Historical Society IH Archives Bates Corporation Wisconsin Historical Society

The following tables list the starting serial numbers for each production year for the most popular International Harvester and Farmall tractor models.
Before we list the tables, it is crucial to understand that IH did not always align model year changes with the calendar year (January 1). Typically, the "model year" for International Harvester ran from of the following year.
