“Father said Grandmother built it,” whispered Cary, her eyes wide. “He said it was too much fun. That’s why he locked the entrance.”
The walls of the maze began to shrink. The sky turned back to normal. And when the laughter faded, Lili and Cary found themselves standing in the palace garden, right outside the king’s study window.
The final chamber was not what they expected. The Enchanted Maze of Giggles did not end with a treasure chest or a throne. It ended in a filled with hundreds of floating mirrors – each one reflecting a different version of the two princesses. In one mirror, they were old women, still laughing. "I can't do it," Cary declared, throwing the book onto a cushion. "My fingers are itching to do something silly. Lili, what if we are not meant to be serious? What if being playful is our magic?"
The Maze laughed—a sound like a thousand twigs snapping. And so the game began. The hedges would part just enough to reveal a path, then snap shut behind them, forcing them deeper. They encountered the Riddle of the Stubborn Stone (“What has a face but cannot smile?” — “A clock!” Lili shouted) and the Puzzle of the Prickly Path (“You can break it without touching it. What is it?” — “A promise!” Cary cried, remembering she’d promised to share her last cookie but hadn’t). The sky turned back to normal
In this latest installment, Lili and Cary stumble upon a mysterious carnival that appears seemingly overnight in a lush meadow near their kingdoms. The vibrant colors, enchanting music, and mouth-watering aromas of the carnival are irresistible to the curious princesses. As they enter the carnival, they're greeted by a charismatic ringmaster who welcomes them to the "Most Marvelous and Astounding Carnival on Earth."
Cary was right. Lili had veered into the Maze of Whispers, a section of the garden enclosed by towering, ten-foot-tall hedges. Lili realized her mistake a second too late. She skidded to a halt just as she met a solid wall of dense green leaves.
Duke Grumblemore stared. His face cracked. A tiny smile appeared. Then a chuckle. Then—against all odds—a deep, rumbling belly laugh that shook his entire chair. "STOP IT!" he roared, laughing. "I COMMAND YOU TO STOP BEING FUNNY!"
