Tone mapping is an approximation. If the contrast looks unnatural, try updating HandBrake to the newest version. The development team constantly updates the color management engine for more natural skin tones and shadow preservation.

For a more accurate and customizable conversion, you can use the filter (also in the Filters tab):
HandBrake allows audio and subtitle passthrough. In the tab, select your original audio track and set the codec to "Auto Passthru" to keep it intact. In the Subtitles tab, add tracks with the "Foreign Audio Scan" behavior and check "Burn In" only for forced subtitle tracks that require hardcoding.
