Issei Sagawa (1949–2022) was a Japanese writer, painter, and actor who gained global notoriety not for his art, but for one of the most infamous crimes of the 20th century. In 1981, while a postgraduate literature student at the Sorbonne in Paris, Sagawa invited a 25-year-old Dutch classmate, Renée Hartevelt, to his apartment for dinner, ostensibly to help him translate German poetry.
